What Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240 does for Almonte
Branch 240, Almonte, participates locally in all activities and services that are synonymous with the Royal Canadian Legion:
Remembrance Day ceremonies, the Poppy Campaign, Veterans Services, Remembrence Posters and Poems Contests for schoolchildren, public speasking contests as well as various programs for seniors and youth.
Locally, Branch 240:
Organizes sports leagues for its members such as Darts, Curling, Cribbage, Billiards and Seniors Games. Organizes and supports Zone and District sports tournaments for Senior Citizens, youth and members.
Provides facilities for community groups to meet on a regular basis. The upstairs hall, adjacent to the kitchen, is used for regular meetings by the Almonte Duplicate Bridge Club, the Senior Citizen's Club 61, the Almonte Lions Club, the White Ensign Association, the North Lanark Agricultural Society, the Community Living Association and the North Lanark Highland Games.
Provides facilities and catering for private functions such as anniversaries, birthdays, wedding and funeral receptions to Legion members, community organizations and members of the community.
Provides extensive financial support to individuals and community groups.
Both the Branch 240 and the Branch 240 ladies auxiliary provide bursaries to eligible secondary school children to help with their higher education.
Acts as a designated emergency response centre for the Municipality. For example, Branch 240 provided meal services to emergency personnel and the militia during the 1998 Ice Storm. Similar support was provided to fire fighters during a major forest fire in 2000.
Our branch has provided catering and refreshment services to local events such as the North Lanark Highland Games and Canada Day Celebrations held off site. The organizers of these events have worked with the Legion for more than 30 years, and are very appreciative of not only the job done, but, also the financial contributions from Branch 240.
